Is Someone Else Accessing Your Facebook Account

Have you ever suspected that someone else was logging into your Facebook account? It’s not a good feeling, mostly because it would drive you crazy if you were unable to prove it. Whether you have an easy password to guess (like the word “password”) or you accidentally left your login information saved on a public computer somewhere, it would be reassuring to be able to check whether or not anyone has been signing in under your name.

There is a nice little security setting built into Facebook that will help you quickly detect if anybody else has been secretly logging into and using your Facebook account.

Just log into your Facebook account and click on Account at the top right of the page. When the drop-down box appears, click on Account Settings.

On your My Account page, scroll down to where it says Account Security and click the change link.

Now you should see a list of all computers (and mobile devices) that have logged into your Facebook account, their location, and when this happened. Rather than an IP address, it displays the approximate geographic location of the device, which is based on the device’s IP.

If you come across an unknown or suspicious device in your list, just click “end activity” on the device and you will automatically be logged out of that machine.

Also, if you would like to add an extra layer of protection on your account, you can enable email/SMS alerts for when someone else tries to log into your account from a previously unknown computer or mobile phone. Features like one-time passwords and secure browsing using the HTTPS protocol are also at your disposal.

Gmail Labs now offers a bunch of Google's most popular search features, including:

* Dictionary definitions: use a keyword like "define" in English and you'll see the first definition of the word, with a link to the dictionary from which it came.

* Spelling corrections: if you mistype something in your search, Google’s spell checking software will automatically ask if you meant a more common spelling of that word (especially helpful when looking up a new word).

* Calculations: type in an arithmetic expression and you'll get the result. In this case the "Paste result" option from the result's pop-up menu will actually paste the result of the computation.

* Local results: you can search for a particular place or for things near a particular place (map results will show up in a few weeks — they're a little broken by our recent switch to use https). The "More info" link will take you to the place page.

* Weather: just type "weather" followed by the city and state, zip code, or city and country.

* News: if your query matches something in the news, we'll show you one hit and an indication of how many related articles there are, with a link to go see them.

In addition, you can now use this Labs feature in any available Gmail language and you'll get search results that match your preferred language.

Finally, as some folks have already noticed, I added a search button to the toolbar when you're composing a message:

If you've got text selected when you click it, Gmail will search for that text. If you don't have text selected, you'll just get a search box where you can start typing.

QT Lite Frees You from QuickTime's Bloat

If you don't use iTunes (or any other Apple software), you can finally rid yourself of Apple's Software Update bloat by replacing QuickTime with QT Lite. QT Lite installs only what is necessary to play QuickTime files and nothing more. It still has all the same settings and preferences as the normal version of QuickTime, though.

QT Lite is very similar to QuickTime Alternative. The only difference is that QuickTime Alternative also installs Windows Media Player Classic, so it should also work as a QuickTime replacement if you want to install iTunes without the QuickTime bloat.

Choosing a smart password

Phishing, a topic that's been in the news, is unfortunately a common way for hackers to trick you into sharing personal information like your account password. If you suspect you've been a victim of a phishing attack, we recommend you immediately change your password, update the security question and secondary address on your account, and make sure you're using a modern browser with anti-phishing protection turned on.

It's a good idea to use unique passwords for your accounts, expecially important accounts like email and online banking. When you create a password for a site, you might think of a phrase you associate with the site and use an abbreviation or variation of that phrase as your password — just don't use the actual words of the site. If it's a long phrase, you can take the first letter of each word. To make this word or phrase more secure, try making some letters uppercase, and swap out some letters with numbers or symbols. As an example, the phrase for your banking website could be "How much money do I have?" and the password could be "#m$d1H4ve?" (Note: since we're using them here, please don't adopt any of the example passwords in this post for yourself.)

Google have released version 3.5 of their free image management application, Picasa.

Available for PC and Mac in English only, Picasa 3.5 adds functionality that bring the desktop client features in line with those already offered on Picasa Web Albums. The Linux version of Picasa, which currently stands at version 3.0, has not been updated.

Picasa now offers face recognition with the 'name tags' feature. Similar to iPhoto '09 on the Mac, Picasa analyses your photos, grouping what it deems as similar faces together. You can then apply names to each identified face, allowing you to search photos based on the people that are in them. If you are signed into a Google account, names are handily auto-completed using your contacts database.

It is pretty straightforward to disable the touchpad in Windows. The settings can be generally accessed via the control panel. Open up Mouse Settings from the control panel, move over to the Device Settings tab and you can access touchpad settings in there.

Depending on the make and model of your laptop you will find options such as ‘disable touchpad when an external USB pointing device is connected‘ which is helpful if you use a USB mouse and want to disable the touchpad when a USB mouse is connected. You can also disable the touchpad entirely from here, or you can choose to disable only the buttons.

I was looking for something to share my notes, so that I could access them on web as well.

Someone gave me the idea to email the notes to myself, so I could get them whenever I wanted. But the idea didn't appealed to me.

Then I found evernote.

I was a bit skeptical about using it, but then, I became a fan within 3 days.

It lets you create, clip, and share notes on the web and see them everywhere. Using your phone, you can take snapshots, read to-do lists, record audio whenever and wherever you like. You can also search through all your notes, even find text within images, whether online or off. It's so powerful.

4. Rest is must

Google offers new fields for Gmail contacts, better importing

Google has added support for more contact fields (like birthday and website) for Gmail contacts and now store each of these fields separately. It makes syncing and round-tripping your data work better.

Google has updated the standalone contact manager with this improvement last month. It is now available in Gmail too, with support for Outlook, Outlook Express, Hotmail and Yahoo in CSV format, and OS X Address Book in vCard format, says Gmail blog post.

With all your contact info in Gmail, you can access it from anywhere, sync your contacts to your mobile phone or other devices, and more easily collaborate on Google Docs and invite people to Calendar events.

Windows 7 RC Now Available for Download

The Windows 7 Release Candidate (RC) is now available for all user. The RC will be available at least through July 2009, so you have plenty of time.

Microsoft says t RC will expire on June 1, 2010. Starting on March 1, 2010, your PC will begin shutting down every two hours. Windows will notify you two weeks before the bi-hourly shutdowns start. To avoid interruption, you’ll need to install a non-expired version of Windows before March 1, 2010.

To install and use the RC, you need a PC with these system requirements:

1 GHz or faster 32-bit (x86) or 64-bit (x64) processor
1 GB RAM (32-bit) / 2 GB RAM (64-bit)
16 GB available disk space (32-bit) / 20 GB (64-bit)
DirectX 9 graphics processor with WDDM 1.0 or higher driver

Google offers search right in Gmail

Google has introduced new Google Search experiment in Gmail Labs to let you search the web right within from your Gmail. When you turn this feature on from the Labs tab under Settings, you'll see a new search box on the left side of your inbox, like this:

Type your search in, and a window (like a chat window, but a bit bigger) appears at the bottom of your screen with the first few search results.

You can click on a search result and it'll open up in another window (or another tab) so you can make sure it's what you're looking for. Once you're sure it's a result you need, moving your mouse over the result back in Gmail reveals a pull-down menu that lets you do stuff with the search result.

What's in the menu depends on what you're doing in Gmail:

If you're reading a message, you can start a reply to the message with the search result as the first thing in your reply.
If you're writing a message, you can paste the result, or just the URL into your message.
If you're chatting with someone, you can send the result via chat.
You can also always compose a new message to send the search result.

If you have keyboard shortcuts turned on, typing g and then / will take you to the search box when you're not composing, and Ctrl + g will do it when you're composing (that's ⌘ + g for Mac users).

Gmail Adds Suggested Recipients

Gmail Labs has introduced a new feature called "Suggest more recipients."

Once you've enabled it from the Labs tab under Settings, you'll see suggested recipients while composing messages. Gmail will suggest people you might want to include based on the groups of people you email most often. So if you always email your mom, dad, and sister together, and you start composing a message to your mom and dad, Gmail will suggest adding your sister. Enter at least two recipients and any suggestions will show up like this:

Click on a suggested name, and they'll get added to your email.

Inserting inline images in Gmail

If I wanted to insert an inline image in Gmail earlier, there were no straight options for me. There were a few workarounds, but I didn't liked them. Gmail finally listened to us . You no longer have to use workarounds to put images into your messages or attach images when you really want to inline them. Just turn on "Inserting images" from the Labs tab under Settings, and you'll see a new toolbar icon like this:

Make sure you're in rich formatting mode, or it won't show up. Click the little image icon, and you can insert images in two ways: by uploading image files from your computer or providing image URLs.

If you're sending mail to other Gmail users, they'll still have to click "Display images below" or "Always display images from ..." to see images you embed.

Gmail has introduced a new feature in Gmail Labs called Sender Time Zone. You can turn it on from the Labs tab under Settings, and you'll see green phone icons next to people who are probably awake and readily reachable (if it's between 9:00 am and 6:00 pm in the sender's local time zone) and red ones next to those who could be sleeping or out of the office:

Click "show details" and you can see when a message was sent in the sender's time zone as well as what time it is for them now:

Message headers always include the time sent and often include time zone info too.

Gmail search made easier (and lazier)

Gmail has introduced a new experimental feature in Gmail Labs: Search Autocomplete, it helps in making search in Gmail easier.

You just need to turn on Search Autocomplete from the Labs tab under Gmail Settings, and you'll get suggestions as you type in the search box. One of the most popular searches in Gmail is for names or email addresses, so the first kind of suggestions you'll see are contacts. Some names are not easy to remember (my last name is an excellent example!) — with this new Labs feature you can just type a couple letters and select the desired contact from the drop down list. Easy and quick as that.

Gmail also offers a bunch of advanced search operators, which provide a powerful way to find that one message you have in mind. You can search in specific places (e.g. in chats or sent items), or search for messages with attachments of a certain type (e.g. docs or photos). With Search Autocomplete, I can just type "photos" or "pictures," select "has photos" from the drop down list (as in the screenshot below), and the search query (filename:(jpg OR png)) gets inserted for me. Similarly, you can type in the word "attachment" and Search Autocomplete will list the most common attachment types for you.

Gmail now lets you send email to friends and family in Hindi and other Indian languages. Gmail has announced a new feature for Gmail that lets you type email in Indian languages.

If you're in India, this feature is enabled by default. If not, you'll need to turn it on in the "Language" section under Settings. Once enabled, just click the Indian languages icon and type words in the way they sound in English -- Gmail will automatically convert them to their Indian language equivalent. For example, if you have Hindi selected, "namaste" will transliterate to "नमस्ते."

Gmail currently supports five Indian languages - Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, and Malayalam.

Interact With 3D Display Using Simple Gestures With iPoint 3D

Researchers at Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft have presented a new innovation, iPoint 3D, that allows people to interact with a 3-D display through simple gestures. There is absolutely no need to touch it with a data glove or use 3D glasses.

The system features a recognition device, not much larger than a keyboard that can be suspended from the ceiling above the user or integrated in a coffee table. Its two built-in FireWire cameras detect hands and fingers movement in real time and transmit the information to a computer.

As the interaction is entirely contactless, the system appeals to video gamers and is ideal for scenarios where contact between the user and the system is not possible or not allowed, such as in an operating room, says Paul Chojecki, a research scientist at the Fraunhofer Institute for Telecommunications.

iPoint 3D will be presented by the researchers at CeBIT in Hanover, Germany.

Google Calendar can now be accessed offline. You can now see your Google Calendar events when you're disconnected. Offline Calendar lets you view your existing schedule and events, but not edit them, so you don't have to print out calendars the night before a trip.

Like Gmail, the offline feature of Calendar uses Gears, an open source browser extension that adds offline functionality directly to the browser. To enable offline Calendar access, sign in to Google Calendar and look for the "Offline Beta" link in the upper right-hand corner of your account, next to your username.

In addition to offline mode, you can see your calendar when you're away from your desk using two-way sync for iPhone, Android, Windows Mobile and Blackberry devices. So wherever you go, Google Calendar can be there with you.

Nokia have unveiled their latest XpressMusic cellphone, the Nokia 5630. This slim candybar runs the Symbian S60 operating system. It is also the slimmest and lightest N-Gage device yet at just 12mm thin and weighing only 83g.

Nokia 5630 comes loaded with a 3.5mm headphone connector, stereo Bluetooth, FM stereo, Internet radio and also includes a 4GB microSD card. It also offers a 3.2 megapixel camera with dual-LED flash and 4x zoom. The new animated Contacts Bar lets you interact with up to 20 contacts directly from the home screen. The ’say and play’ feature lets you speak the name of an artist of track to automatically play it.

Wireless connectivity includes HSDPA as well as HSUPA for high-speed uploads and downloads. It would allow users to exploit internet services such as widgets, Ovi Share and Nokia Messaging.

Nokia 5630 XpressMusic is expected to be available in the second quarter of 2009 for around 199 Euros.

Samsung Announces World's Highest Density DRAM Chip

Samsung has announced the development of the world's first four gigabit (Gb) DDR3 DRAM chip. The part is built using 50 nanometer (nm) process technology.

Samsung says the 4Gb DDR3's high density combined with its lower level of power consumption will provide a reduction in electricity bills. It will also offer a reduction in maintenance fees and repair fees involving power suppliers and heat-emitting equipment.

The 4Gb DDR3 DRAM operates at 1.35 volts (V), thus improving its throughput by 20 percent over a 1.5V DDR3. Samsung claims in 16GB module configurations, 4Gb DDR3 can consume 40 percent less power than 2Gb DDR3 because of its higher density. Its maximum speed is 1.6 gigabits per second (Gbps).

By applying dual-die package technology, the new chip can deliver modules of up to 32GB - offering twice as much capacity as memory modules based on the previous highest chip density of 2Gb.

Samsung had announced the development of the world's first 50 nm-class 2Gb DDR3 DRAM in September 2008.

According to the market research firm International Data Corporation, DDR3 DRAM market will account for 29 percent of the total DRAM market in 2009 and 75 percent in 2011.

Nokia Unveils Classic Mobile Phones

Nokia has launched three new models in the entry- to mid-level segment. The new models include the Nokia 6700 classic, the Nokia 6303 classic and the Nokia 2700 classic.

Leading the new collection is the Nokia 6700 classic, which “shares the same 'DNA' as its predecessor, the Nokia 6300,” according to Soren Petersen, Senior Vice President, Nokia.

The Nokia 6700 comes with a 5 megapixel camera, assisted GPS navigation with Nokia Maps, and high speed data access. It offers precisely crafted parts with a full metal keymat, and is expected to retail for around EUR 235.

Further down the price bracket is the Nokia 6303 classic. It sports 3.2 megapixel camera, large 2.2 inch screen, and pre-loaded Nokia Maps. Users can plug any music accessory into the standard 3.5 mm audio jack and have a fully fledged mobile music player. It will cost just 135 Euros, before taxes and subsidies.

Nokia 2700 classic, at an estimated price of EUR 65 before taxes and subsidies, is one of most affordable, full featured handsets. It features an integrated digital music player and a 2.0 megapixel camera and offers up to 2GB of storage via the memory card slot.

Nokia expects to ship all three devices in the second quarter of 2009.

OCZ Introduces New Apex Series 2.5” SSDs

Asus has announced AIR3, which integrates an iPod speaker with Internet radio. The AIR3 is equipped with HDSS (High Definition Sound Standard) certified speakers, and the ETL (Embedded Transmission Line) module within the chambers that provide natural, real and clear sound quality.

The AIR3 is compatible with all iPods (except iPod shuffle) and charges the iPod concurrently while playing audio files. It includes S-Video and composite video outs to display movies and photos from the iPod on TVs and LCD monitors connected. Multimedia players can be connected to the AIR3 via an Aux-In jack located at the back of the AIR3 and the bundled cable.

The internet radio feature is accessed over Wireless LAN 802.11b/g and gives users access to about 10,000 radio stations worldwide with a wide range of categories. It supports UPnP sharing, and thus allows for easy sharing of music with connected computer or users. It also provides weather forecasts for major cities around the world via the Internet.

We are yet to hear about the release date or the price of AIR3.

Super Talent Announces Enterprise Class UltraDrive SSDs

Super Talent has announced a new line of UltraDrive solid state drives (SSDs), the UltraDrive LE and the UltraDrive ME. Super Talent claims these enterprise class SSDs are twice as fast as the world’s speediest SATA hard drives.

Super Talent says the UltraDrive LE outperforms 10,000 RPM hard drives with sequential read/write speeds of 230/170 MB per second. The UltraDrive LE supports very high transaction speeds (IOPS). , the UltraDrive LE is based on SLC NAND Flash and is offered in 32GB, 64GB and 128GB capacities.

According to Super Talent, UltraDrive ME SSDs represent the fastest available 2.5-inch internal storage solution for SATA-II notebooks with sequential read/write speeds up to 200/160 MB per second. UltraDrive ME use company’s third generation MLC NAND based SSD and is available in capacities up to 256 GB.

While the pricing is yet to be announced, Super Talent says both the UltraDrive LE and ME SSDs will be available in January 2009.

LG Unveils Sunlight illuminated LCD Display

LG has announced a 14.1 inch LCD panel for notebook PC that is illuminated by sunlight instead of the backlight unit when used outdoors.

LG says the use of selective reflection plates in existing backlight panels enables the switch from reflective mode in a high luminance setting (sunlight) to transmissive mode in a low luminance setting (indoors and at night). The LCD panel allows users to easily switch from backlight use (transmissive mode) to outdoor reflective mode with the touch of a button.

It also provides a significant increase in battery life as the display’s outdoor energy consumption falls to one fourth the level of indoor energy consumption. The display also resolves visibility issues with a contrast ratio exceeding 9:1 when used outdoors in reflective mode.

LG Display will showcase its new 14.1 inch sunlight Illuminated LCD at the upcoming Consumer Electronics Show (CES) 2009.

Have you ever thought an email would make a great starting point for a document. Gmail now brings to you an experimental feature for Gmail Labs that does just that: with one simple click, "Create a document" converts an email into a Google Docs document.

No more copying and pasting the text from your email -- just open the message you wish to convert, click the "Create a document" link on the right side of the page, and voila, you have a brand new document which you can then modify and share!

Even if you're not interested in converting any of your current messages into documents, you can easily open up a blank doc by hitting g and then w (just make sure you have keyboard shortcuts on).

To turn on this feature, go to the Gmail Labs tab under Settings, select "Enable" next to "Create a document" and hit "Save Changes" at the bottom.

If you want, you can still view in plain HTML from a link at the top of the new viewer. And if you want to download, save, and view your PDFs later while offline using client software, you can still do that by hitting the "Download" link.

Gmail now offers a new Labs feature that lets you send SMS text messages right from Gmail. It combines the best parts of IM and texting: you chat from the comfort of your computer, and your friends can peck out replies on their little keyboards.

Just click on Settings, and go to the Labs tab. Scroll down until you see "Text Messaging (SMS) in Chat" and select Enable and Save Changes.

Currently works for cell phones in the United States only right now.

Gmail Offers To Do List WIth Tasks

Gmail team now gives you a To Do list you can use right from within Gmail.

Take entering a new task: just click in an empty part of your list and start typing. No buttons to click and it's saved automatically. Hit Return and you've got a new task right there.

You can also easily convert emails into tasks: select one or more messages and go to More Actions > Add to Tasks. (Or turn on keyboard shortcuts and use + t.)

To enable Tasks, go to Settings, click the Labs tab (or just click here if you're signed in). Select "Enable" next to "Tasks" and then click "Save Changes" at the bottom. Then, after Gmail refreshes, on the left under the "Contacts" link, you'll see a "Tasks" link. Just click it to get started.

So you want the Gmail stickers! The Gmail team has designed and printed up a whole bunch.

There's the standard Gmail m-velope -- dressed up in glitter. One of three bookplate style stickers you can stick on anything from the inside of a favorite book to your laptop or your skateboard. And there's a sheet of keyboard shortcut stickers intended as a tool to help people learn Gmail's shortcuts. The adhesive is a bit more removable than standard stickiness, so you can take them off once you've trained your fingers.

Google now offers Gmail gadget at Google Desktop for Windows.

It covers the basics such as reading, searching, and sending messages. You can star messages and use the same keyboard shortcuts. It doesn't take up much space in your sidebar or desktop, and you can also resize it to show as few or as many messages as you'd like.

Blockbuster 2Wire Launch MediaPoint For Movie Downloads

Blockbuster has introduced the 2Wire MediaPoint digital media player, offering movie fans instant access through their television sets to thousands of titles from the latest movie releases to classic favorites.

The MediaPoint player is being offered free with advance rental of 25 Blockbuster OnDemand films for $99. After the initial 25 rentals, movies will be available for as little as $1.99 each.

The MediaPoint digital media player works seamlessly with any broadband connection, either wirelessly via built-in Wi-Fi or wired via Ethernet cable. The player uses progressive playback, not streaming, so the video quality is consistent irrespective of the internet connection. Movies can be played right away or saved to watch later. Additionally, the player supports HD video content and can be connected to HDTVs. It can be integrated seamlessly into home entertainment systems through composite cable, HDMI, component cable, or Toslink.

Toshiba To Introduce 16GB microSDHC

Toshiba has reinforced their memory card line-up with the launch of a 16GB microSDHC card. Toshiba further announced the addition of ultra fast read/write 8GB and 16GB SDHC cards to its line-up.

Weighing 0.4g, the 16GB microSDHC card supports class 2 SD speed with a maximum write speed of 6MB per second. It can store 270 hours of music at a bit rate of 128kbps.

All of the new SDHC memory cards comply with the SD memory standard Ver. 2.00. The two new SDHC cards support class 6 ultra fast read/write speed with a maximum write speed of 20MB per second.

Toshiba says the mass production of the new SDHC cards will start in December, while the production of new microSDHC card is slated to start in January 2009.
