Google Now Indexes Scanned Documents

Google has announced that it is now indexing scanned documents. It is now able to perform OCR on any scanned documents that is stored in Adobe's PDF format. This Optical Character Recognition (OCR) technology is able to convert a picture (of a thousand words) into a thousand words -- words that can be searched and indexed, so that these valuable documents are more easily found.

This is a small but important step forward in making all the world's information accessible and useful.

Scanning is the reverse of printing. Printing turns digital words into text on paper, while scanning makes a digital picture of the physical paper (and text) so you can store and view it on a computer. The scanned picture of the text is not quite the same as the original digital words, however -- it is a picture of the printed words. Often you can see telltale signs: the ring of a coffee cup, ink smudges, or even fold creases in the pages.

To people reading these documents, the distinction between words and pictures of words makes little difference, but for a computer the picture is almost unintelligible. Consider a circle. Should it be read it as a zero, the letter 'O', just a circle, or the ring from my coffee cup? People learn to answer this kind of question very quickly, but for the computer it is a painstaking and error-prone process.

To see the new system at work, click on these search queries. Note the document excerpt in the search results, along with the full text presented after the 'View as HTML' link:

[repairing aluminum wiring]
[spin lock performance]

New in Gmail Labs: Calendar and Docs gadgets

Gmail team has launched a few Labs experiments that let you add gadgets to the left-nav, next to Chat and Labels.

To get you started, they have worked with the engineers from the Calendar and Docs teams on two highly requested features: a simple way to see your Google Calendar agenda and get an alert when you have a meeting, and a gadget that shows a list of your recently accessed Google Docs and lets you search across all of your documents right from within Gmail.

There's a third Lab that allows you to add any gadget by pasting in the URL of its XML spec file (e.g. http://www.google.com/ig/modules/youtube_videos.xml).

A couple of notes:

(1) Try out Anatol's Navbar drag and drop Labs feature so you can easily re-order all the boxes on Gmail's left hand side.

(2) Not all gadgets are fully compatible with https, so if you're connecting to Gmail via https, you may see mixed content warnings caused by parts of the gadgets being served over http.

More changes to Gmail contact manager

Gmail has made some changes to it's contact manager. Up to this point, if you emailed someone five times, the contact was moved into My Contacts. Now, it will no longer be automatically added to your My Contacts group. Instead, you can go to Suggested Contacts, select the contacts you'd like and move them into My Contacts. All of your contacts -- whether they're in My Contacts or Suggested Contacts -- will continue to show in auto-complete as you're composing messages.

Gmail labs now offer the latest Labs feature: Canned Responses, or email for the truly lazy.

Turn on Canned Responses in Labs, and you can set a filter to grab one of your saved responses, create an automated reply, and hit the Send button for you.

You can also set up different automated messages for different keywords. Ain't that cool!

Now you just have to turn on Canned Responses in Labs.

A sneak peek at Gmail on Android

The first Android-powered phone, the T-Mobile G1, is coming out on Wednesday. If you like using Gmail on your computer you'll feel very much at ease with Gmail on Android-powered phones. You can download documents and MP3s, manage and view labels, star and archive messages, save drafts and even report spam.

With the combination of push email and notifications on the status-bar, you never have to check for new mail. Whenever a new message arrives, you will immediately get notified (in real time) with a little "@" sign at the top (see image below on the left). Then you can pull down the notification pane and see the new messages (on the right).

The email is deeply integrated with other applications on Android-powered phones. For instance, to share a post you come across while browsing the web, you can simply press and hold the finger down on the link and then choose "share" to immediately create an email with that article's web address. The tight integration with Contacts on the device then allows Gmail to suggest contacts based on the first letters you type.

All of your Gmail contacts are immediately available on the phone upon first log-in. And whenever you create a new contact on the device it's automatically synced with your Gmail contacts and therefore immediately backed-up, so you never need to worry about losing your contacts if you lose or break your phone.

To learn more about Gmail on the world's first Android-powered phone, check out Mobile blog post, or the Gmail page on mobile.google.com/android.

Gmail Tip: Sending empty messages

Official Gmail Blog: Tip: Sending empty messages

If you try to send an email using Gmail with only text in the subject line, Gmail would always prompt you to add in body text.

This is to make sure that you have not forgotten to insert the body text as most emails have body text.

Now, however, you can add "EOM" or "(EOM)" at the end of the subject line (short for End Of Message), and Gmail will silently send the message without the unnecessary prompt.

Ford MyKey Allows Parents To Control Speed

If you had been looking for something that could make sure your teenagers are safe while they drive, your prayers have been answered. Ford is introducing an innovative new technology, called MyKey, designed to help parents encourage their teen-agers to drive safer and more fuel efficiently, and increase safety-belt usage.

MyKey allows owners to program a key that can limit the vehicle’s top speed and audio volume. MyKey also provides earlier low-fuel warnings and can be programmed to sound chimes at 45, 55 and 65 miles per hour.

MyKey lets parents limit their car's top driving speed to 80 miles per hour and cut off the stereo's volume at just 44% of its max output.

With MyKey, the Beltminder chime continues at the regular interval and the audio system is muted until the safety belt is buckled. It also makes it impossible to disable some of the usual safety measures like Park Aid and Cross Traffic Alert.

MyKey is appealing to parents of teen drivers, including 75 percent who like the speed-limiting feature, 72 percent who like the more insistent safety-belt reminder, and 63 percent who like the audio limit feature, according to a recent Harris Interactive Survey conducted for Ford.

Ford’s MyKey debuts next year as standard equipment on the 2010 Focus coupe and will quickly become standard on many other Ford, Lincoln and Mercury models.
